Marc Broussard talks 'Water,' preps new album

Soul singer Marc Broussard [ tickets ] isn't afraid to cash in on a little publicity. After his song "Must Be the Water" served as the theme for TNT's on-air promotion of the 2008 NBA All-Star festivities, he decided to name his new EP after the tune. "It was going to be the title of my next major-label big-release full album," Broussard said during a recent phone interview with LiveDaily. "But I wanted to capitalize on the advertising money that was being spent using my song, so we put out the 'Must Be the Water' EP." The EP, which was released Feb. 19, features five songs: the title track, "Try Me," "Someone You Know," "It's Over Now" and "Y'all Ain't Ready." It was produced by Justin Tocket, Broussard's former bass player, and Calvin Turner, his current bass player. "We recorded my last soul project together with those guys, as well," Broussard said. "We had a really great experience working on that record together. When I signed a new deal with Atlantic Records, I did everything I could to make sure that we would be able to work together again. It was really easy. Justin and Calvin both are really good at what they do."Justin's the guy who's going to get the sounds dialed up from twistin' the knobs on that console that is so huge. I have no idea what it does. Calvin is the music guru. He's a young Quincy Jones, if you will. He does all the horn arranging and string arranging. He's a genius when it comes to that stuff. They work really well together. They have very different takes on what they're going to be doing that day but, at the same time, they work really well together.""Must Be the Water" is Broussard's debut release for Atlantic Records. A one-time Island Def Jam signee, he left that label for Atlantic to reunite with the team that signed him at Island, including North American Chairman and CEO of Recorded Music for Warner Music Group Lyor Cohen. WMG is Atlantic's parent company."They're an amazing label," Broussard said. "Actually, from top to bottom, the same people I signed with at Island Records four years ago are at Atlantic. Lyor Cohen was the CEO of Island Def Jam when I signed my first record deal with Island. He left the company shortly after I signed, and subsequently the entire staff kind of followed suit. It was only natural for us to want to work together again."Three weeks ago, Broussard wrapped up production on his debut full-length for Atlantic, which tentatively is self-titled."We're just waiting on the thumbs up from the label to go ahead and finish mastering. Once that comes up, I would suggest the record dropping some time in July or August," he said.

David Mamet - Mamet Shuns Computers

Legendary writer DAVID MAMET writes all of his plays and movies with a typewriter - claiming he doesn't even know how to turn on a computer.

The 60-year-old's stage credits include Speed-the-Plow, Glengarry Glen Ross and American Buffalo, and Oscar nominations for his screenplays for The Verdict and Wag the Dog.

Mamet is as prolific in middle age as he has ever been, but is steadfastly refusing to be lured into the digital age.

He says, "I don't know anything about computers, I don't know how to turn them on. I don't have the time. There's nothing about them that seems to offer me anything I can't do elsewhere, so I'd rather do it the way I know how."

Mamet is also convinced he is saving himself from a time-consuming addiction: "Everyone in my family and elsewhere in the world gets addicted to them. They're supposed to be labour-saving devices, but they just seem to be a waste of time."

With their operatic heavy alloy and monster-movie stage theatrical role, Lordi seemed a most unlikely choice to represent their native Finland in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. So merely conceive of how many jaws hit the floor when the group not only claimed top of the inning honors, merely as well earned the most points in the august event's chronicle. Vocalist Tomi Petteri Putaansuu, aka Mr. Lordi, assembled Lordi in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1996 following a concert headlined by his favorite banding, Kiss; after recruiting guitarist Jussi Sydänmaa (known as "Amon"), bassist Magnum (real name unknown), late Chidren of Bodom keyboardist Erna Siikavirta ("Enary"), and drummer Sampsa Astala ("Kita"), he began writing songs as well as creating the work out foam-latex devil costumes and pyrotechnic personal effects that would become the authentication of their theatrical live performances. After a series of label auditions went nowhere, Lordi gestural to Sony BMG Finland and in 2002 issued a debut LP, Get Heavy, which blush wine to the number three spot on the Finnish charts on the strength of the number one single "Would You Love a Monsterman?" Magnum left the group before long later, and with new bassist Pekka Tarvenen ("Kalma"), Lordi cut a sophomore album, 2004's The Monsterican Dream, returning to the Top 20 with "Blood Red Sandman." After touring in support of the LP, both Tarvenen and Siikavirta left the card, and with new bassist Samer el Nahhal ("Ox") and keyboardist Leena Peisa ("Awa"), Lordi released a third base full-length, The Arockalypse. When the record's chart-topping lead single, "Hard Rock Hallelujah," was appointed Finland's official accounting entry in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, some religious leaders criticized the go, charging the band with advocating Satanism (even in the face of their 2003 rack up "The Devil Is a Loser"); Lordi scored the most points in contest history with 292, 44 more than than runner-up Dima Bilan of Russia. In the wake of Lordi's victory -- Finland's number 1 in Eurovision contest -- tabloids from across Europe scrambled to publish photos of the band sans make-up, earning criticism from fans and media rivals likewise and forcing public apologies from the offending parties. On May 26, 2006, Lordi storied their triumph with a resign open functioning in Helsinki's Market Square, playing to more than 80,000 fans. Finland president of the United States Tarja Halonen even took the stage to honor the band for their world-wide acknowledgement.
